The typical bliss ball is made from roughly equal parts dried fruit and nuts, which means they’re pretty high in fat and kilojoules. Substituting nutritious rolled oats and sweet, smooth-textured aduki beans for most of the nuts makes for a satisfying, yet much less energy-dense treat.

Ingredients:

1 cup cooked and well-drained aduki beans
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup cacao (raw chocolate powder)
1/2 cup pitted dates
1/4 cup walnuts or pecans
Additional cacao or desiccated coconut for rolling the balls in

Method:

Place all ingredients except additional cacao or coconut in a food processor or high-powered blender, and blend at top speed until creamy (I used my Thermomix on speed 9 for 40 seconds).

Roll heaped teaspoons of the mixture into balls, then roll in either cacao or desiccated coconut (or both :)).

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.
