You weren't born depressed, anxious or with low self-esteem. You weren't born with fears or phobias that hold you back from doing what you really want to do. You didn't come into this world feeling cursed to be always poor, unhappy or in bad relationships. You were born with everything you need in order to be happy and successful.
So what happened?
Over time, we all have experiences that undermine our sense of being in perfect harmony with ourselves and the world. These experiences can be small 't' traumas like being criticised, teased or rejected, or big 'T' Traumas like car accidents, abuse, neglect, or death of a parent or sibling.
If we don't have the tools to deal with all these traumas, they leave 'traces' in us that can be reactivated when we remember the event, or experience something similar to it.
To get a sense of this, think of the most humiliating experience you've ever had. Did you feel something shift in your body - like a tightening in your chest or a sinking feeling in your stomach? That's the trace left by the trauma.
These memories of our emotional and physical responses to past events that made us feel fearful, sad, angry, helpless, hopeless, or abandoned, are triggered by current experiences that remind our unconscious mind of the original trauma: Years after being teased by his classmates for forgetting his lines in the school play, the sales executive still breaks into a cold sweat every time he has to address the weekly staff meeting. The woman whose father physically abused her when she 'back-chatted' him, still feels overwhelming panic when she is involved in even the most minor confrontation. The child whose mother was severely depressed and unable to meet his emotional needs, grows into an adult who feels unworthy of love, and unconsciously sabotages his close relationships so that he always ends up feeling abandoned. There are endless variations on this theme, that I've encountered in myself and my clients.
The good news is that there is an astonishingly powerful, yet easy-to-learn, set of techniques that can erase these traces from our systems, so that we're free to respond to current and future experiences without being tied down by the baggage fo the past. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) are the leading force in the emerging field of energy psychology. I use EFT (and other meridian tapping techniques) in a highly intuitive way, using them to identify and resolve core issues in your life that hold you back from being happy and healthy. I also blend EFT with other philosophies and techniques that I've found to be useful and effective, such as Transactional Analysis and neurolinguistic programming (NLP).
