Cheryl, a health-conscious primary school teacher, was sick to death of being told, “You’ll just have to learn to live with your illnesses.” The antibiotics she’d been prescribed for chronic sinusitis caused reactive asthma for which she was prescribed a puffer; then she was put on a steroid drug for extreme low blood pressure which caused severe fluid retention.

Each time she went back to the doctor, she was given another drug to take to ‘fix’ the problems caused by the last one, and meanwhile her health was spiralling downward: she began to suffer migraines, developed gluten intolerance and contracted glandular fever.

But when Cheryl asked her doctors and specialists if there was any way she could help herself to get healthy again, they simply told her “There’s nothing you can do; you’ll just have to take these medications for the rest of your life.”

By her third consultation, Cheryl was thrilled to share that she had joined several Meet-Up groups and was attending at least one event per week – something that she could not have even imagined doing just months before, since she had been spending most of her time sick in bed.

Society is training you to be helpless about your own health

Doctors had tried to let Cheryl off the hook by saying, “It can’t be helped – you’re just genetically predisposed to these conditions,” but Cheryl was still holding out hope that she could recover her health naturally.

Like Cheryl, you’ve probably been told that your health problems are due to factors beyond your control, such as your genes, family history, exposure to viruses or ‘just getting older’. On top of this disempowering belief,
